Tension Headaches

There aren’t many things that top the frustration of a tension headache. Especailly as it becomes worse when you are at your busiest or super stressed! There are a few things you can do to ease headaches at home, there are my top tips!

First we need to understand whats going on, tension headaches occur for 2 reasons.

Tightness in the muscles.

The head likes to be centred, perfectly on-top of the neck. When it is off axis by even 1º, this can cause some upset and result in a headache. One thing that can cause the head to be off centre is tightness in the muscles. An example of this is the big trapezius muscle that goes along the top of the shoulders, if this is tight it can pull the head to the side and off centre. By releasing these muscles you can prevent the head being pulled and thus prevent headaches occurring.

Trigger points.

A trigger point is a type of knot that is extremely painful. The brain responds to this pain by shooting the pain to a different area of the body to shift the focus away from what is actually happening. You can get trigger points all over the body, they are easy to recognise as there are common patterns where they refer the pain. For the shoulders and back the common referral areas are the head and can be felt as a headache.

I have seen many clients with trigger point headaches, I have even had client that feel it in the eyes and teeth!

What can you do?

There are a few things that can ease these type of headaches. I would always recommend a Sports Massage for tension headaches, as your therapist will be able to ease these issues in a safe/comfortable way without too much discomfort. However.. I am writing this blog in lockdown 3, when treatments can’t take place. Here are my top exercises you can do at home.

1. I would recommend stretching the area to take any pull of the head.

Try holding each of these positions for 60 seconds, I also like to do deep breaths as it calm’s the mind and eases stresses on the mind.

2. Self Massage to the neck.

I prefer to do this with a small ball rather than my hands. I use the ball in small circles over my neck, if I find any sore spots I keep the ball still applying enough pressure but not so much its unbearable. Stay with this point until it starts to ease off (2-5mins)

If the massage causes any headaches, this will be a trigger point. I would avoid self-massage if you get any headaches as it will be too intense to self-treat.

3. Keep Moving.

As vague as this sounds, most problems occur when we are static for long periods. Keeping moving throughout the day and adjusting posture/set up will really help.

4. When you headache is bad try some broad pressure points.

Applying a weighted object (just as a rice bag) on top of the shoulders and even on the very top of the head can help to relieve pressure. The medical book I like to reference says a bag of rice on the head, but it’s not the most practical object when your headache is flared! I also recommend a tight headband or hat around the head.

Remaining Open in Lockdown

Sports Massage Therapy is now seen as an essential health care service and can remain open throughout the second lockdown.

This is a huge move for the industry as the past 20 years Sports Massage has been seen as a ‘spa’ service and segregated from our follow Physio’s and Osteopaths. Now Sports Therapists of a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification are seen on the same level and are able to remain open for the second Covid19 Lockdown for healthcare purposes.

To remain Covid Secure and keep in line with government guidelines there are some new measures that must be put into place.

♻️ Sustainable Clinic ♻️

There is a huge problem in the way we are all living to be Covid Secure. Unfortunately one use products have risen with disposable face masks and coffee shops fearing our re-usable coffee cups.
Since returning to the clinic after the March lockdown, I was shocked at the increase of waste our small clinic was throwing out with the extra requirements to be CovidSafe. Instead of our waste collection coming fortnightly, this is now happening twice a week!! 4 times the waste, truly shocking.

I had to do something, quickly. I am so proud to say that TurnAround Therapy is now as sustainable as possible, whilst remaining Covid Secure and Comfortable.

Here are the Sustainable Products we are now using

Scrummi Towels
We use Scrummi biodegradable towels as a base sheet for a couch. They are really comfortable to lie on and take 8 weeks to biodegrade.
Songbird
We have used Songbird wax since opening the clinic in 2017. Their waxes are all made with local natural materials meaning they feel great and leave the skin moisturised. They also offer Eco-tubs refills with fully compostable packaging.
Delphis
Delphis is a fantastic company who pioneered the first 100% recycled plastic bottle packaging. They are UK based and have received the royal stamp of approval twice.
We choose Delphis for our cleaning products as their products kill 99.9% of bacteria and are plant based! Thats some serious plant power. We use their Sanitiser spray, hand soap and hand sanitiser to keep the clinic Covid Secure.
Biodegradable wipes
To keep the clinic as clean as possible we use Delphis sanitiser sprays and then use sanitiser wipes when doing deep cleans after each client. Dettol’s new biodegradable wipes are perfect as they are tough on bacteria and kinder to the planet.
Biodegradable Gloves
I was so worried about the amount of gloves I was throwing away. Showa’s biodegradable gloves are nitrile so kind on allergies, the perfect find!
Biodegradable Aprons
Another fantastic find by GVHealth. The perfect way to keep clinically clean and sustainable.

Surgical Masks
I am required to wear IIR Surgical masks to meet safety standards. I wear the worlds first recyclable IIR mask made from grade 5 plastic.

Plastic Free Visor
I can’t believe there are Visors that are made from wood pulp and paper!! I use the ReelShield plastic free visor that can be composted after use.

Smol
Behind the scenes I use SMOL washing products to clean all linens. There washing capsules are plastic-free and fully recyclable packaging, their fabric conditioner comes in refillable recycled packaging. I’ve used SMOL for the past year and have found them the perfect eco alternative for washing.

What Can you do?

Whilst researching into which products to purchase I found some fantastic low waste shops in the area. If you are interested in finding low waste alternatives to products you use at home you should visit Kilo on Holloway Road or the Haelan Center in Crouch end.

If your shielding at home, Good Fillas is the perfect choice as they come to your door to refill your supplies!

Since writing this blog, I have gone on to do something about it! I launched TurnAround Earth on January 1st 2021 that supplies sustainable PPE that wont add to the mess!

We have work hard behind the scene, to keep all our clients safe when visiting TurnAround. Here are the changes we have made to be Covid-Safe, these changes are based on guidance from the GCMT.

  • Deep cleaned the clinic, including the removal of soft furnishings. The consultation room will no longer be accessible to minimise contact points.

What we are doing:

  • Your therapist will be wearing personal protective equipment which includes a mask and apron.

  • There is now a 30 minute gap between appointments to enable disinfection of the practice space, therapy table, equipment and facilities.

What we need you to do:

  • Please wear a face mask.
Regulations have not changed for healthcare professionals or within the healthcare clinical so a face covering must still be worn.
  • You will be asked to sanitise your hands upon arrival and a temperature check will be taken. Please avoid touching anything until you have sanitised your hands.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Clinic.

The Benefits of Medical Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted into the body to promote healing and improve muscular function. At TurnAround Therapy we use Medical Acupuncture which is a westernised version of this traditional technique. In Medical Acupuncture the needles are used directly into any tense areas of the body which has an immediate effect, helping to reduce pain.

How Acupuncture Works

The Acupuncture needles stimulate nerve fibres under the skin which helps to reduce sensitivity & ultimately reduce pain. A process called Vasodilation occurs at the site of the needle, which means blood flow is directed to those specific points of tension where the needle is, this blood contains nutrients that help heal the body, by encouraging blood to areas of pain it helps to speed up recovery. Acupuncture also helps to produce endorphins and oxytocin which are pain and stress relieving chemicals.

Will it be Painful?

Acupuncture rarely hurts. The most that people experience is a dull ache around the base of the inserted needle, or a slight tingling feeling when the needle is inserted.

If your unable to relax in your treatment it can cause discomfort in the muscle when the needle is applied, as well as moving and contracting the muscle which will irritate the needles. The more you can relax, the more of an enjoyable experience you will have.

Our Treatments

At TurnAround we use medical acupuncture during our Sports & TurnAround Massage’s as an additional tool to relieve pain alongside massage techniques. Your therapist will always ask before using any needles.

IASTM TOOL

IASTM tool stand for instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilisation. This means using a tool or instrument to increate mobility and reduce pain for the soft tissue and fascia. At TurnAround Therapy we use the ‘Rolls Royce’ of IASTM tools, the stainless steel IAM tool created and hand crafted by Malcolm Innes

What are the Benefits IASTM?

Pain reduction- The tool increase blood flow to an area, which is great when you have tight or adhered muscles. Increased blood flow speeds recovery and in turn reduces pain.

Improve range of motion- By using the tool on areas with restricted movement which asking you to repeatedly go through the movement, we tap into the nervous system and start to switch off pain specifically pain perception related to movement.

Fascia Release- The tool is fantastic for the fascial system that cover the body, it breaks down adhesions &

Scar Mobilisation- By breaking down fascial restrictions & adhesions we can begin to improve the quality of a scar and create more order to reduce a  scars visibility.

Fascia 101

Ok I here you, what the heck is Fascia? I always describe fascia in two ways for my clients

  1. Like the skin to a sausage. Fascia is a like a casing surrounding all of the  muscles.
  2. A cobweb that covers the entire body underneath the skin. If you imagine pinching the corner of a cobweb, this will have a huge effect on the entire web. This is what happens in the body, when an area

What to Expect

The tool is used in a back & forth motion on the skin, kind of like buttering bread but with greater speed.  Lily has been practising with IASTM since 2016 and as an advance IASTM tool provider so your in great hands

There are some horror stories out there around IASTM tool and some nasty overuse images where the body is covered in deep purple bruising after treatment. This should not happen and is an incorrect use of the tools.

When we use our IASTM tool it will be any where from 30 second to 1 minute, this will result in some redness to the area but this shouldn’t last any longer then 10 minutes. The redness is simply a result of improved blood flow to the area.

What issues do you use IASTM for?

  • Neck & shoulder strains
  • Tennis/ Golfers Elbow
  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Iliotibial Frition Syndome (ITB Syndrome)
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Tendinopathy
  • Soft Tissue Dysfunction & Tension
